How did I miss this??
Normally I tell my friends that though I am not very politically aware, at least I'm surrounded by people who are. I may have to stop saying this. How come I did not notice anyone else commenting on this? Are my friends just a bunch of people who only appear to care around election time?

"It is no accident that James A. Baker III is the co-chair of the new blue ribbon commission on voting issues. Baker helped ensure that the votes in Florida 2000 were not counted. How did Baker get on the commission?"

Sorry, I don't spend much time on the libertarian/green party websites. I really also don't give much of a rat's ass about James Baker, and am happy that Jimmy Carter's also on that commission.

There are one hell of a lot of more important things going on right now. We need, for example, to do all we can to stop the nuclear option from going through in the senate, and it would be damned nice to be able to protect reproductive rights.

The last election is the least of our problems at the moment.

Consider looking into what you can do to preserve some measure of sanity within the house and senate as they are right now. I believe there's even a rally re the nuclear option some time tomorrow.

For example, here's a bunch you can do about pharmacists who ignore their profession's code of ethics & refuse to dispense certain prescriptions :

if you send that link to anyone else I recommend cutting off the "/step2" as it causes an error

Done, with my added commentary

I'd be interested to know if you have heard of anyone actually persuading a pharmacist to sign this pledge, http://www.prochoiceamerica.org/long_way/pharmacist_pledge.pdf

I suspect most pharmacists are so afraid of the controversy they would likely not. However this may be the time to exhume that idea I had last year for an LJ community dedicated to reporting offending pharmacists and permitting those of us interested to boycott specific offending pharmacies. (Unless PP is already doing the same) We could have links there to these PP pharmacist pledge forms and ever report preferred pharmacies where specific pharmacists have signed the pledge.

Here is what I added to the petition:
And as a socially and politically motivated individual, I am prepared to BOYCOTT ANY PHARMACIES which as much as harrass my friends who attempt to get their prescriptions filled, let alone refuse to fill said prescriptions.

To date I have two friends who are not even sexually active who have been harrassed at pharmacies for trying to fill Birth Control Pills which were prescribed for OTHER reasons.

Let it be known that there is a price to tolerating such antics in your company's pharmacies.

Re: Done, with my added commentary

Interesting question. I don't know. Right now there are 4 states with pending legislation to force pharmacies to make EC/contraceptives available, and 13 with pending legislation to protect pharmacists who don't wish to.

It's going to be quite the battle. I'm not sure whether a registry of pledged pharmacies will create more pressure for or against them.

Re: Done, with my added commentary

Oh, I see what you mean, anti-abortionist people could use the list of pledged pharmacies to boycott them. OK maybe listing the pledged ones is not as good as listing the offending ones. However in some smaller towns it might actually give consumers a place to go to find adequate service.

Re: did you show this to steve?

Steve doesn't even vote in presidential elections? Why would he be interested in voting reform?
