Gay Marriage in MD. Do your part to make it happen!
Even if you are not gay, even if you don't believe in marriage as an institution. The religious right is not simply banning a religious ceremony, they are passing laws to inconvenience gays in ways that run against the very rights upon which this country was founded, simply because they choose to believe that gays are simply straight people who are misbehaving.

I just received this notice from PFAW today. Please note the part about ensuring that Churches will retain the right to decide who they perform marriage ceremonies for. Considering that Churches have often discriminated against certain individuals for the silliest reasons, I find it absurd that some people (some people I've met on OKCupid even) had the idea this law was ever about forcing churches to perform gay marriage ceremonies. Gah!

That PFAW email is behind this cut

People for the American Way is working closely with Equality Maryland to support the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, a bill that would ensure that all same-sex couples in committed relationships are able to marry. We have a golden opportunity to have Maryland become the first state in the Union to offer same-sex couples the same legal protections as married couples through legislation.

Sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Gwendolyn Britt and in the House by Dels. Victor Ramirez and Benjamin Barnes, the act also makes clear that churches may continue to choose whom to marry.

Please take a few minutes to contact your state senator and all of your delegates and urge them to co-sponsor the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act. The 2008 legislative session starts next week so we need to act fast -- the more co-sponsors the legislation has, the stronger its chances of passage will be.

Enter your address is this form to find all of your state legislators:

The denial of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Maryland means the denial of hundreds of vital protections that married couples take for granted. These basic protections include medical decision-making rights, funeral decisions, property ownership rights and inheritance rights. The easiest way to remedy this discrimination is to expand the marriage laws of Maryland to include all couples.

It is up to all of us to do as much as we can to ensure that marriage equality is realized in 2008.

We thank you for your continued support of these basic rights. Together, we have the ability to move marriage equality forward in Maryland!

P.S. The Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act will be assigned a bill number when it is formally introduced (hopefully with many co-sponsors).

Sponsor has died :(

The sponsor of this died.

And of course, lots of other stories.

I heard of her passing on the radio, and so when I read this I though I'd let you know. I don't know where it leaves the bills she has sponsored but have not gone though yet.
