I don’t know what Adelphia is. I kind of assume that’s broadband? When you say you "have" it, does that simply mean it is available to you, or that you receive/are subscribed to it. If you receive it, why not use it? You are very confusing.

As for using both AOL and Yahoo/prodigy, this sounds to me like you either take turns using these connections or you have multiple phone lines.

I had the impression you are vaguely DC metro and may be elligible to get Verizon DSL for only $35 a month. know of two people doing this who are MUCH more satisfied with it than I am currently with Comcast, which actually costs more. If I were elligible, I’d switch, but the phone lines where I (still) am are still too crappy to support DSL at any price. After I move I can upgrade, and then pay 25% less than I currently pay Comcast.

If you order Verizon DSL and a good firewall router, (I can recommend a couple of superior models in the $40-50 range) you can connect both your AOL Laptop and your Yahoo "family" computer to the single faster connection and not tie up a single phone line. Once Verizon proves reliable you can then cut back your AOL service by $10/month, and you may find that Yahoo/prodigy has a similar price scaling for people who don’t use their dialup connection.

If you have two phone lines you can then disconnect one, probably saving about $25 per month.

Of course if you tend to take your laptop with you and dial out from it in the field, you’d need to pay the $10 dialup anyway so that you can still do that.

Re: Replacement reply to Leanaside

You are very confusing. thanks. ;-)

adelphia is the local cable provider. verizon is our phone company. both DO offer broadband, but it won't work where we live at the current time. we JUST recently got the ability to call DC w.out it being a long distance call! our phone lines aren't that great, but at least they connect at 48k.

yes, we have 2 phone lines. the 2nd one is only $10/month or something. my parents did that stupid deal where you get $400 off of a computer when you subscribe to prodigy, which is why we have that.

when i bought my laptop in april, they offered me 6 months of free service to AOL, so i took it. i plan on moving out in january and i don't go online at home that often, anyway, so it doesn't bother me too much. when i buy my own place (with my fiance), we plan on going the cable route...AND we'll be in an area that it actually services, since we're planning on living in fairfax county, not loudon, which is where i currently live.
