Godwin's Corpus??
Godwin's Law states that comparisons between most any subject and Hitler or Nazi Germany will appear to rob such an argument of its validity.

What I'd like to know is at what point does the very nature of Godwin's Law become invalid. Suppose your discussion regards Hitler himself. On the other hand, I can fully understand why comparing a German born Pope to Hitler simply because of his nationality would both invoke Godwin's law and at the same time rob an argument of its validity.

What I would like to know is, at what point can certain political actions, possibly domestic political actions, be aptly compared to the behavior of dehumanizing facist regimes so accurately that Godwin's Law would not be invoked.

Take the current campaign of George Bush to PERMANENTLY overturn our right to "Habeas Corpus"; He does not seek to merely suspend it, as The Constitution makes provisions for in times of domestic war or uprising, but to permanently omit it from the list of inalienable rights granted to all US Citizens in the Constitution of the United States!

Even Bush's supporters appear to be in shock over this one. When the president of a previously "Free" country, turns his back on his supposedly "solemn" vow to uphold The Constitution and then attacks it in such a manner that must inevitably lead to reorganizing our country into a facist dictatorship, isn't it time we "suspend Godwin's Law"?

On a related note, it occurred to me today how Bush could "Legitimately" claim the need to suspend "Habeas Corpus". All he'd need to do is declare Iraq to be the 51st state, in which case the "uprisings" there could be called "Domestic". He may even be planning that, but personally I don't think that the rest of the countries which also fought to "Free" Iraq would approve.

If you only watch one video, it should be this first one. However, what it fails to make clear is that Habeas Corpus is ALREADY being denied to people captured inside the US borders, apparently including one innocent Canadian. Bush's campaign to permantently remove our rights to Habeas Corpus will not do so much to EXPAND such abuses to apply to US citizens as well (although it will) as it will to LEGALIZE ongoing abuses and protect the Bush regime from prosecution.

This first link (edited) takes you directly to the video, thanks to the help of ladyplatypus who provided me a much better link than I was able to find online. I consider it a "Must See" and advise you to save this record of the landmark worst offense by our current president.

Barrack Obama on the importance of Habeas Corpus
In this speech, he reveals that a Canadian in NY was detained, transferred out of the US to Syria and TORTURED before it was recognized it was a case of mistaken identity. Barrack appears to assert that had his rights under Habeas Corpus been protected, as apparently they were not, the mistaken identity would most likely have been revealed prior to torture.

OK I've just made your comment visible. I have to be going and don't have time to correct the many errors in my post. I was exhausted and very upset when I wrote it. It isn't very often that I lose a country!

I've just now friended you also and in doing so I've added you to my Party Filter. No, I'm not especially assuming you will make it to any of my parties, given your geographical location, but chaosdancer insists you are very cool and so I must assume you would be probably make a good guest should you decide to make the trek. To read up on my party announcements, simply open the "party announcements" filter.

I think the failure to raise Godwin's Law is indicative of its suspension in the current case.

Gah. I'm so beyond infuriated with all this. I'm really hoping the House gets as close as possible to 50/50 split or even more. Even if the dems still don't have control, 49% is enough with the moderate republicans getting cold feet that it should stop this insanity.
