And I haven't gone anywhere. I'm realizing that here I am on LJ and I'm not journalizing anything. I am making lots of comments on other people's journals and no doubt confusing many of them as there's not much about *me* here. So here's a start.

August, at least August in Maryland, is a really bad time for me. In years past, when I lived with the folks, I'd head off to cooler climes and survive it better. I cannot do that now and between air quality, allergies and temperatures, it feels kinda like a mild case of the flu.

So there you have it. When my blood starts flowing again I'll be getting back to moving out of this rental house in Gaithersburg and back to the folks house in Potomac. That and working to finish some emissions repairs on my 1983 conversion van so it will pass inspection.

I suppose I ought to explain that. My dad died and my mom's in the dementia wing of a local nursing home, and so the house sits. At present a friend whose own house is in trouble is staying there and helping me with some needed repairs. I hope to be a the resident of (more or less) my own house before christmas.

Oh, come to think of it, maybe some of this post actually should be in my user info. Not sure. I think part of the problem is I don't much like to think about any of this.

Ouch. I can identify with your situation. I wish you well and look forward to learning more about you. Do you want to be on my "special friends of Rick's" list - or do you think that would be TMI from a stranger who is only a friend of a friend?
fixx From: fixx Date: August 30th, 2003 03:17 pm (UTC) (Link)

I don't know...

- who Rick is, but I'm pretty sure I'm not his "special" friend.
- what TMI stands for, I could guess "The Merry Influence" but as cheerful as that sounds, probably wrong.
- if you still qualify as "a stranger". I think the term is "familiar", like i know who you are, I just don't know you very well at this point. :-)

Sure go ahead!
I don't think you'd suggest it if it were actually a bad idea. I think it's cool that TJ is operated more by volunteerism and invitation.

My slow memory

I just remembered who you are!

Took me a few hours but I did it. I kept thinking I'd seen that name before. I commented on your computer troubles, or rather my frustration with my friend who thinks of me when HER computer has problems but has *never* referred anyone else to me.

I'm actually sort of embarrassed by my reaction. In the past 8 years or so I actually tried making a living at this stuff. When my income depended on "satisfied clients referring their friends to me" it was actually more of an issue.

Since I now have a MUCH more time-efficient (but not very satisfying) form of income, I've adjusted my fee structure to near-zero (as my user info explains), only doing as much as I feel like, mostly offering good advice, and occasionally "unique" services.

That she would not even refer a friend of hers to me to save their data when price is not even a consideration, well I cannot help to find that sort of disturbing.

So it appears you are posting again, although still not very often. Should I take that to be an indication your computer is now fixed, or are you just borrowing time on other people's systems?

Re: My slow memory

Hmmm. Yes: my computer problem was the blaster worm - fixed long ago. I have an ex on my journal who reads my posts whenever he can, so I usually only post to a friends list or a custom friends list in order to avoid hurting him. The "special friends of Rick's" remark means that custom list -- I named it based on a silly line from Casablanca...

And TMI means "too much information."

Re: My slow memory

That you show such concern for your ex is admirable.

That you operate within more than one list explains the scarcity of postings I commented on.

That you would offer to invite me into your "special friends" list is very flattering and I certainly accept. :-)

Is there anything I have to do? As I have already indicated, I am new here and I may need some hand-holding to guide me about various options.

And February in MA isn't too much fun either, from what I've heard.

Where are you from originally?

Let me guess, your fiance complains about the winters and you complain about the summers?

I'm not saying it makes sense but I know I have at least half of that right. :-)

lol!

we were up there in april and the weather would go from 70 to 30 really quickly...in a matter of days, you had snow, then sunshine, then snow again...weird weather!
fixx From: fixx Date: September 2nd, 2003 12:23 pm (UTC) (Link)

I stand corrected

You complain about both the summers and the winters for the two of you. :-)
leanasidhe From: leanasidhe Date: September 2nd, 2003 12:33 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: I stand corrected

hahaha
i don't really complain about the weather, b/c it's to be expected that it will be weird...the only thing that gets to me is the HUMIDITY. i hate it. that makes my asthma bad!

Re: I stand corrected

Oh there's a solution for that well two solutions

1) Leave the state for August
2) Stay inside with the AC running constantly all month.
(brief outings to collect the mail, take out the trash and recycling, and occasionally buy food)

At the moment I am doing the latter.

I "have asthma" as well, but as with allergies it tends to be sort of a "threshold" think I have worked out various methods of remaining within my limits. If you have cats and if you have not checked out my web page, please do so. Check out the section on the "littermaid project" There I describe how I have virtually eliminated cat litter odors (and allergens) from my houshold. That's practically critical to my management of my asthma.

I call talk air cleaners till your ears fall off, don't get me started. :-)

Re: I stand corrected

lol

nope, no cats. we have dogs, though. :) i'm not really allergic to anything, yay, but the days when the temperature is high and so is the humidity, i have problems breathing. my night job involves working outdoors (it's almost over, thank god!), so when it was a "code red" or "code orange" day, i'd have to either stay inside or not work.

and my ears don't fall off THAT easily. ;-)

Re: I stand corrected

Ears usually don't fall off easily, if you use a fresh enough a potato, but that always seems sort of wasteful.

Re: I stand corrected

"Only comes in plastic" ?

Well, you know, the modern male Reproduction-Responsible Mr Potato heads, will be that way.

But seriously, (and god you are making me feel OLD!), in the last few years, classic version "Mr Potato Head" kits of plastic parts made to fit into REAL potatoes have been available.

Please read this entertaining link about the history of the Mr Potato head toy.
