Doing Internet by Wireless tonite
Not having enough room yet to set up Teresa's "office" I set up her computer in the bedroom, but not having enough time to run ethernet cable from that location to my router I had few choices, either phone or wireless.

How I did it
One of my favorite surplus co's was selling what appeared to be a better than consumer quality "Compaq" wireless access point. It had two antennas and resembled a first generation 1200baud modem. It was the older, slower variety of 2.4ghz wireless, but connected conveniently by means of a standard ethernet plug and could plug directly into my firewall/router. At only $25 plus shipping it seemed a worthwhile investment.

At the other end I connected Teresa's computer using a pocket sized USB wireless adapter I bought previously from another company on sale for something like $25 as well. Cute as a bug, it sort of reminds me of a contraption made for sewing and shaped like one of those large art erasers with plastic handle, it shows all the quality of manufacture of most "Dollar Store" items, so you can guess how much faith I had in it.

To my joy and surprise, this tiny device actually worked! Installing the drivers locked up the PC at least twice and I was about to give up about the same time it stopped complaining. I am sending this post from Teresa's PC as a sort of a test. I'm running ZoneAlarm on each PC connected so theoretically I'm immune to wireless hackers, or at least relatively so for now and I don't intend to use wireless full-time forever either, but it might be nice now and then.

OK this might not be fast enough to set up a "movie server" in my home, but it is faster than my comcast connection and that's all that matters. Hopefully I can run the wires by the end of summer.

Teresa's moved in with you? Mazel Tov.

This is news? I could have sworn I've told you that. Yes, Teresa has moved in with me in addition to her two cats, as well as a convenient array of furniture that almost makes up for all the furniture which was destroyed when my mom started taking in stray cats.

The death of my mother means that until "the house and its contents" is appraised I am no longer permitted to sell or discard any more of her furniture, so the place is uncomfortably crowded at the moment, which is complicated further by some other factors I may attempt to describe in subsequent posts.

Wow... how long does it take to get the apt appraised?

House not apt, and how long is mostly a matter of finding an appraiser (who is sane) and scheduling. Then depending on the appraisers level of sanity it could take anything from a few days to several months.

The reason sanity is a sticking point is that the way my mother's will is written, one might say she owned everything that was in the house at the time of her death, including my own property, and add to that that some of my property never left the house and more continues to come in from my rental property AND Teresa was already moving in with me when my mother died... and...

...Sanity becomes an issue. The appraiser has to be made to believe only certain items actually belonged to my mother.

Considering it's not unusual for an appraiser to wave at a kitchen and declare, "$50", and then to wave at the living room furniture and declare "$100" it's probably not as much a problem as you may think.

My father's done a lot of executor stuff. If you wish, send me an email and I'll forward it to him and he may be able to suggest an appraiser for you.

Besides, it's what, you and your sister? Is the will going through probate?

Wireless Thinking???

I'm just having having trouble making the connection between what I wrote and how you responded.

Re: If you need to

Sorry, I replied to your reply from "outside" and forgot that this thread had meandered somewhat. Since my discussion with vvalkyri I have made contact with a sensible appraiser who is willing to take my word for it what was and what was not my mother's.
