Non-consentual castration of children -current medical practice in the US
Fact: Every year roughly 2% of babies born in this country with both male and female characteristics. Given statistics available online that means that over 70,000 children were born this way each year for the past two years.

It is currently the practice to alter them sexually to *appear* female. These people are very often essentially castrated at birth and their parents are told this is necessary for their health, when in fact the surgeries performed have less to do with health than "gender abiguity"

This link claims that the "corrective surgery" has been going on for nearly two centuries, suggesting that at least in the beginning the surgery really was little more than nipping off a penis to make a girl lacking a clitoris or likely any reproductive ability.

What's really disturbing to me is that in our modern world you'd think that people would be enlightened enough to accept this is a natural occurence and give the child some say in their chosen gender instead of mutilating them without consent. More disturbing still is that girls created this way may very well have the gender preference of boys, meaning that in a sense the medical establishment is manufacturing lesbians. Considering how these lesbians were formed under this sort of medical law, it is even more disturbing that now states are seeking to make both Gay Marriage as well as similar civil-unions illegal.

Fortunately I now understand that people who care about this subject as I do are gathering in strength and referring to this "medical normalization" as it is currently referred to, as instead "human rights abuses" on a level with the non consentual mutilation of women in countries such as africa. Sure it's nice they sterilize their instruments but non consentually castrating people is still an ugly business.

Excerpt from Bodies Like Ours:
San Francisco Report Addresses Human Rights Violations of Intersex People

Today (05/03/2005) the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (SF HRC) released a report entitled, "A Human Rights Investigation into the Medical "Normalization" of Intersex People".

This long-awaited document examines the way intersex is treated in American hospitals and by society. A critical examination of the current standards, the report is based upon testimony of those born with intersex, their families, ethicists, scholars, and medical professionals. It puts forth a number of recommendations for change in areas the commissioners agreed are serious human rights violations. These recommendations include suggestions to medical facilities on improving the care of those with intersex entrusted to their care. According to the SF HRC, ""Normalizing" interventions done without the patient's informed consent are inherent human rights abuses."

Gender studies are one of those things I have a somewhat vested interest in. This is actually something that's come up in conversation several times. (My spouse and I discuss the rare "what if" situations as practice for when we have children.)

Apparently, this "medical normalization" is something doctors have convinced themselves is necessary, and the patient will almost certainly die without it. Gives me chills thinking of it, I don't like the idea of a doctor trying to pressure people into deciding to make their child a girl just because they don't know what to put on the birth certificate.

I have to do research now. 'Cause I'm almost sure there's some third option to put on said birth certificates.

Since I wrote that, it has come to my attention that in fact the castration of intersex babies in the US has dropped of significantly since 1990 except for certain, arrogant, backward parts of the US, namely TEXAS.

This is why I like to say, "The next time TEXAS threatens to Secede, LET THEM!

Actually I would alter Texas by chopping it in half more or less horizontally and let the asshats emigrate to the lower half, and the progressives move north before building a great wall between the two halves. You know the Texans haven't bellyaching for a great wall for decades. Now they can have it, but between us and them. I'm thinking of extending a similar favor to Florida, since they are so non-compliant about fair elections.
