Eminent Domain run amuck
I'm nearly certain that the founding fathers never foresaw this:

http://fairfieldweekly.com/gbase/News/content?oid=oid:119000

The U.S. Supreme Court recently found that the city's original seizure of private property was constitutional under the principal of eminent domain, and now New London is claiming that the affected homeowners were living on city land for the duration of the lawsuit and owe back rent. It's a new definition of chutzpah: Confiscate land and charge back rent for the years the owners fought confiscation.

Finding that something that is inherently unfair to be constitutional under an inherently unfair rule which ought not be constitutional in the first place or should at least be used with extreme restraint does not mean that abusing the victims further is therefore correct. I'm sorry but in MY America this would not be legal.

I think the proper interpretation is that the property remained the citizens until it was seized by New London, and the seizure was delayed until the supreme court determined that said seizure was in fact legal. In any case, rent is a figure arrived at by a contractual agreement between a renter and a landlord. Since no such contract has been made, no rent can be charged. To do so would be like charging squatters retroactive rent and then throwing them in jail for non-payment.

Lovely. I've been bitching about this decision since it was made. Fortunately, most states have been enacting laws to limit this misbegotten decision, including I think two bills sponsored on the federal level. It will be "interesting" to see what happens.

What especially doesn't make sense to me is that it shouldn't have been a decision that repugs would want. Which goes to show the real enemy isn't necessarily conservative vs liberal but corporate vs individual, and guess which it looks like the court's looking to...

I also notified these folks of the current status of the kelo folks, since I didn't see anything about it on their site, but it seems a logical thing for them to publicize and hopefully get ppl more outraged.
