Smoking Firewire

I honestly did not think I would install a "cupholder" on any of my serious computer equipment so soon. Someone must have been listening when I said I wouldn't, because shortly after I said that www.geeks.com offered their combination cigarrette lighter socket/retractable cupholder kit on sale for half price. I couldn't resist. Unfortunately it did not come with a "4x" label, darn it, but to my surprise it actually came with a functioning cigarette lighter *plug*, which I'm never going to use (or permit to be used) around any of my computer equipment. Still the retractable cupholder serves multiple functions.... mainly humorous. It also serves as a place to store the keys for my removable hard disk drives and fills the empty bay on my firewire case until I remove my other DVD burner from the computer it currently resides in.

I'm really not one to install colored fluorescent lights inside my computer or use neon glowing cables, but a WORKING 12 volt socket??? That's just practical enough to get my attention, and btw, that socket is the "real thing" with ceramic insulator and retaining clip, much better quality than the type most commonly found in Radio Shack and many auto parts stores.

Just in case you are interested, here is the link to the actual product page as well. Eventually I'm going to make a 4x label for this thing, but if you find one online anywhere or come up with a great idea for how to make one, (shiny, stylized or whatever) please write back, I'd be interested.

Oh and hey, if you have read this far and are trying to think of a legit use for this product, just to make it seem that much more practical, here's one. The same company sells a device intended to be used in your car to transmit music from your cd or MP3 player to yoru car radio, but it can be used just as effectively to transmit the sounds from your computer's sound card to any old boom box which may very well lack external inputs, and it plugs into a cigarrette lighter! EDIT: actually they have two and I am listing both links now.

It's so hard to keep a cupholder in a system near me. I've already ordered a Double Layer DVD burner on sale for $57. I actually could have bought a different one for about $50 but this one also does DVD-R single layer disks at 16x, and that's 8 times the speed of my current one.

eh... maybe I'll remove one of the HDD drive trays and keep the cupholder after all?

A side note, at the very last LUMSFS meeting, I was sitting with the latest addition to the group, fenix_grimwolf and a member of 15 years who had not yet joined LJ. Somehow the subject turned to stupid user stories and to our surprise the non LJ user had never heard the cupholder story which fenix_grimwolf related beautifully, then I told both of them about the availability of this joke-cupholder which they can themselves order if they wish.
