The back-door draft for the Iraq War has been engaged
It seems only a week or two ago they were talking about military cutbacks in Iraq which at first sounded like a pull-out, but this article dated only yesterday seems to suggest otherwise.

US Army forces 50,000 soldiers into extended duty, 29 Jan 2006 13:51:50 GMT

The method is called "stop loss". Here are some excerpts from the article above.

When you sign up for the military, you're saying, 'I'll give you, say, six years and then after six years I get my life back.' And they're saying, 'No, really, we can extend you indefinitely.'"

Congressional critics have assailed stop-loss, and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry called it "a back-door draft." The United States abolished the draft in 1973, but the all-volunteer military never before has been tested by a protracted war.

If you read this, would YOU volunteer?? I don't think so! The news about cutbacks appears to be a reuse to lul the country out of its anti-war stance while the "Stop Loss" rule keeps the war operating at full tilt while putting our already exhausted and demoralized troops in yet greater danger because now they fell like prisoners themselves betrayed by their own government.

Please save this article to your hard drive (or webspace or LJ) and the next time one of your friends tells you he or she is thinking of volunteering for military service you make sure you show this to them!

This is not new. They were stop-lossing almost from the start.
