I was listening to NPR and they announced a record death-toll from the heat in a town in arizona. Among the dead were elderly people whose heat had failed. The authorities were unable to understand why the death toll would be higher than in previous years.

I have two explanations and while each individually may not explain all of them, combined they might.

1) we have a larger elderly population than in previous years
2) Cardiologists are now prescribing "potassium sparing diuretics" which alone should be helpful in preventing dehydration, but they totally "drop the ball" when they specifically instruct their patients, "Do not take potassium supplements when taking this new medication". Before "potassium sparing diuretics" it was necessary to instruct cardiac patients to take such supplements, and it is understandable that they would want to make sure that the patients did not do so with the new drugs.

The elderly are often Lemming-Like about “doctor’s orders”, so when doctors tell them not to take their old potassium supplements, which encompassed every form from pills to bananas to Gatorade, they are likely to assume there is some serious interaction and not understand that it is STILL NECESSARY in severe heat, so unless they have the good sense to take them anyway they are pretty much doomed to pass out in this sort of weather.

Combine this medical advice with a growing elderly population and this is simply going to happen. I figured this out some years back when my then SO’s grandmother was displaying all the symptoms that I get when I need gatorade and when we gave her some gatorade she improved. We then inquired into her meds and learned made this discovery and she’s not the only one I’ve heard about this problem from.
